Walking and Hiking

From time to time we do a bit of Hiking. For many years that has been with a trusty GPS often using and making our own GPS maps. This page contains a few walks we have done in different places and various other GPS/walking related things.

Tenerife

We have had a couple of holidays to Tenerefe recently. We tended to divide our time between driving, walking, eating, drinking and sleeping. Here we have information on a few of the more notable walks. With one exception, these walks were always done from the car and back to the car; they were either circular or we walked out and back. This data relates to 2012 and 2013.

  • Guajara from Vilaflor

We did this as an out and back walk. Starting in Vilaflor, up to Paisaje Lunar, then on to the Guajara summit and back to Vilaflor. Its a long way and a long, hard days walking. But it is also well worth the effort. The day we did this there was snow on the top of Guajara. That made the top section quite hard and a little slower than it would have been otherwise.

Alternatives:You could descend into the crater and to the Parador if you can organise transport.
  • Teide from the east
The standard walk, from the Montana Blanca car park up Teide, past the refuge, to La Rambleta and then up the last few hundred feet to the summit. This was an all day, out and back walk.

    Park path:Sendero 7, Sendero 11, Sendero 10.
  • Pico Viejo and Teide
This really is the big one, and its not helped by the path up Pico Viejo being quite hard to find in places. It starts at the Mirador de Chio car park in TF-38, climbs to the rim of Pico Viejo, the climbs on up the lava flows to to the Mirador de Pico Viejo, round the path to La Rambleta amnd then down the other side to the Montana Blanca carpark on TF-21. Although we did have a summit permit, there was a lot of ice and snow and all 3 paths from La Rambleta were closed. The cable car was running and the staff at La rambleta really didn't believe we had just walked up over Pico Viejo. The weather and the walk was stunning, the sun shone, we didn't see anyone all the way up and the only soubd was the ice melting in the sun and tinkling as little pieces dropped off. But the ice and snow slowed us a lot and the track from the Viejo crater to the Teide lava flows was compltely burried in places. The path to the summit looked very difficult and we decided time and the cablecar staff were was not on our side, they were very keen for us to go down the cablecar, but we persuaded them to let us through the gate and descended directly. We walked from just after daybreak till dark; 12 hours. Fantastic, and we will do ita again, but next time without the snow.
The track to the Pico Viejo crater is the correct Sendero 9. We hunted down (and logged) the waymarks screwed to the rocks en-route, see file ... Sendero_9_waymarks [gpx] [kml]

    Park path:Sendero 9, Sendero 12, Sendero 11, Sendero 7.

Guernsey

  • Imperial hotel to Petit Bot bay
This is probably the hardest bit of the cliff paths in Guernsey. About 13km each way and with over 1500ft of overall hight gain virtually all of it up steps and some of them quite large and steep. As usual we walked out and back starting and finishing at the Imperial.
